What's the Buhugu Initiative?

It is a group of individuals, from Buhugu and elsewhere in the world, working together to address some of the challenges faced by people in the rural community of Buhugu.

We also want to build connections between people in Buhugu and those of you elsewhere.

So, come join us virtually or visit us in Buhugu. And, let's explore what's possible.

What have we experimented with so far?

A public library, free computer training to all, subsidised internet access, IT internships, IT services, nursery school, poultry project and more!

And it is completely volunteer run.

During 2010 we will be focusing a lot more on sustainability, building on all that we have learnt so far.

Who decides what projects are implemented?

The members of the Buhugu Initiative come up with ideas based on their experties and interests. We also consult the community members about what they consider as important ideas to explore.

However, no venture can take place without the community's approval. And Buhugu has a long tradition of making decisions through consultation, discussions and debate.

Who's paying for this?

We offer IT services both locally and to international clients. This pays for all our running costs.

We are kickstarting ventures that have the potential to generate revenue towards a village fund. This village fund can then be used to implement new ideas.

We are also tapping in to the power of the social network. This means contributions from us, our friends, their friends and so on.

Why Buhugu?

In 2007, many of us were involved in setting up a community computer center in Buhugu. The establishment of the Sironko Digital Village was quite an amazing and overwhelmingly positive experience.

Encouraged by the level of involvement and ownership by the members of the community, some of us wanted to work together to address other challenges faced by people in Buhugu. And thus, the Buhugu Initiative was born.
